Dry Eye treatments

Dry eye can come in many forms and varying treatment options may be appropriate. We recommend asking our doctors to evaluate your eyes and discuss the treatment that will be best for your scenario.

SeverE DRY eye

For up to 75% of dry eye sufferers in America, symptoms are more severe. We all have glands in our upper and lower eyelids that continually secrete oil onto our eyes to create a comfortable surface for optimal vision. When we don’t blink as often, for instance on screens, these glands get clogged and can deteriorate over time. We are excited to now be able to help the nearly 86% of our dry eye patients who suffer from Meibomian Gland Dysfunction with a series of minimally invasive in-office treatments! In as little as four treatment sessions, patients can have the following benefits:

  • regenerate meibomian glands

  • longer lasting dry eye relief

  • significant reduction in tear drop dependency

  • clearer, more comfortable vision

  • mild tightening of skin and reduction in wrinkles around eyes

Forma- I: Radiofrequency

Our doctors recommend the Radiofrequency (or RF) therapy as a non-invasive and safe procedure that uses gentle thermal heat to target the underlying cause of meibomian gland dysfunction and unclogs oil glands in the eyelid to improve tear quality. This allows our doctors to gently express and clear those glands. RF also promotes a process called neocollagenesis, or the growth and repair of collagen rebuilding and repairing the meibomian glands, but also results in smoother, tighter, and more youthful-looking skin at the treatment area. By stimulating gland activity and replenishing the oils of the eyelids to our eyes, this treatment can help alleviate discomfort, blurred vision, irritation as well as improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and bags under the eyes.

Lumecca- I: Intense Pulsed Light

Our doctors recommend intense pulsed light (or IPL) treatment to deliver light energy reducing inflammation of the eyelids, rosacea, eyelash mites, and improving collagen synthesis. This indirectly helps dry eye symptoms and associated discomfort.

FAQs

  • Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) happens when the oil glands in your eyelids get blocked. Since those oils are what keep your tears from drying out, a blockage can cause uncomfortable dry eyes, inflammation, and potential damage if it's ignored. As dry eye is a chronic, progressive condition, it is imperative to take medical intervention to alleviate long-term discomfort.

  • Most patients will start to feel and see improvement after the first treatment, however, a series of 4 treatments is typically recommended for optimal, more long lasting results.

  • Patients over 18 with symptomatic or asymptomatic meibomian gland dysfunction can safely undergo this treatment. There are a few exceptions, such as patients who are pregnant or breast feeding, that our doctors will discuss prior to treatment.

  • Unfortunately, insurance doesn’t cover these treatments, so they are out-of-pocket. However, because they target the actual cause of dry eye rather than just the symptoms, they may save you a lot of money in the long run by cutting out the need for pricey prescription drops.

  • Forma-I feels like a hot stone massage. After treatments of both Forma-I and Lumecca-I, you may feel almost a sunburnt feeling on the skin around your eyes that subsides in anywhere from minutes to a few hours.

  • During the first 4 series of treatments, results get progressively more lasting. After this initial series of treatments, most patients will need 1-2 treatments annually to maintain the results.

  • Forma-I (RF) will take about 10-15 mins per eye for a total of about 30 mins. Lumecca-I (IPL) will take about 5-10 mins in total. If you are getting both procedures done, plan to be in the office for no more than an hour.

  • Most people who have the treatment experience significant improvement in their dry eye symptoms. In trials at other offices, they are seeing anywhere from 85%+ success rate in their patients symptoms.

At Home therapies

For mild dry eye sufferers, at home therapies may be sufficient to treat symptoms. Our doctors typically recommend artificial tears, gel tears at night, humidifiers and warm compresses to name a few. You can find their common recommendations on our shop dry eye page.
