Myopia Management
Myopia, or more commonly referred to as nearsightedness, is on the rise in children, but there is now more options than ever to slow this progressive condition.
Stellest is the newest, and quite possibly, easiest option to us in the way of myopia management. These lenses were FDA approved in October 2025 to decrease the myopic progression 71% over the course of two years wearing Stellest lenses. While these are new to us here in the US, they have been proven to be successful for years in other countries allowing our doctors to feel confident in using this option as first line for several of our youngest patients. Check out our blog post here where we go into all the details about this option to slow myopia in kids.
As our younger patients start to get more active and competing at higher levels in sports, we often start to hear about more interest in contact lenses. We love the MiSight contact lenses for our myopic children interested in contacts. These are daily disposable soft lenses that can keep yearly progressions to about -0.25D of prescription, as compared to more than -1.00D on average yearly. We love the daily contacts for all of our patients, but especially for kiddos as they are so much easier to use safely and effectively. Check out our blog post here where we go into all the details about our go-to contact lens option to slow myopic shifts.
The oldest trick in the book for nearsighted progression in kids is daily atropine eye drops. With advancements in technology, this may not be the most effective option available to us anymore to slow changes in eyeglasses prescriptions, but it is likely the cheapest and can be a great first-line of defense against myopia. Check out our blog post here where we go into all the details about these daily eye drops to slow nearsighted progressions.
